Class 1 Information

Welcome to Class One!

We are a Foundation Stage class of 15 children taught by Mrs Woods on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Mrs Barons on Thursdays and Fridays. We have a lovely bright room and our own outdoor playground where we enjoy a pure Foundation Stage curriculum with lots of practical learning through structured play and topic based activities.

We have fun learning our letters and sounds, supported by PhonicsBug and we quickly learn to apply these to our early reading and writing skills. Our early number skills are developed through practical, play-based activities. We love to be out and about in our Outdoor Explorers sessions each Thursday afternoon - making the most of our big field, woodland area and Spiritual Garden. We like nothing more than meeting people from our local community, going on memorable trips and being active in our own outside play space or in our lovely big hall.

We’re a busy little class who come to school with a smile, starting our school days in a fun and safe environment, becoming part of the family that is Landscove. Below you can see our termly topic webs and some of the things we have been getting up to...

Class One News...

‘Thank you’ to Rachel for visiting us and teaching us all about her job as a vet during her amazing ‘hands on’ workshop.

The children had the opportunity to scan the teddies to see if they were microchipped and bandage the ‘animals’.

Class One's ‘Work We Are Proud Of…’ wall is looking fantastic; a wonderful celebration of our 'New Life' topic!

Class One really enjoyed their very muddy visit to Caddaford Farm yesterday. Will Watson showed them the apple orchard.

Yet again, Class One made their teachers immensely proud with their ‘have a go’ attitude; kindness to each other; sporting skills and behaviour.

This week we have been exploring how teen (and some larger) numbers are made from 'tens' and 'units'.

Class One had the most wonderful day at Stover Country Park today.

In the morning the children explored a honey-pot trail inspired by "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" by Michael Rosen.

After lunch, everybody enjoyed having a go at pond-dipping!

Class One had a wonderful sunny afternoon in the Spiritual Garden this week, where they learnt about busy garden birds in the spring time.

Class One enjoyed an Easter egg hunt today!

Class One ended their Science Week learning with an amazing, immersive space experience.

Many thanks to the Explorer Dome team for a fantastic experience.

As part of our science week, class 1 have been creating volcanic eruptions using fizzy drinks and Mentos!

The children predicted how many Mentos we would need to make the eruption.

After learning which dinosaurs were herbivore, omnivore or carnivore, we discussed what we could put in a healthy smoothie for a herbivore.

The children agreed that fruit and vegetables were healthier than chocolate and fizzy drinks, so we used strawberries, bananas and orange juice.

After some careful cutting and noisy blitzing, the children enjoyed drinking their delicious, healthy, herbivore smoothies.

Today we went to St. Matthew's Church. We used our observation skills to sketch the beautiful, old building that's important to the community.

The children have been making maps of the school.

Class One really enjoyed their first Martial Arts session today - what a fantastic experience and so much fun!

Our palaeontologists have been busy exploring our dinosaur museum and the funky fingers dinosaur activity.

We’ve been very impressed with their knowledge of all things dinosaur.

We've been combining groups of objects to solve addition problems this week.

We really enjoyed shopping for healthy fruit and vegetables, and working out how much they cost.

We have been exploring 'Google Earth' - we found the UK, England, London, Ashburton and Landscove!

We all worked together to make a map of our playground.

This week in FaB we have been learning about Christian baptism.

After talking about how different faiths welcome babies, children and adults, the children watched a clip of a Christian baptism.

They learned about the sign of the cross and the giving of a candle.

As the children made beautiful crosses as a gift for Mary, we talked about how Mary might be feeling, and what happens during a christening.

Class One have been learning about deciduous trees in winter.

A part of their learning, they made clay trees with trunks, branches, twigs, bark, buds and even a few nests!

Class One had fun creating their own islands this morning. They imagined they were birds looking down from the sky - 'a bird's eye view'.

They discussed and thought carefully about what things they wanted to include on their islands.

We had a great first day of dance at Landscove C of E Primary School. A big thanks for Alex from Dance Fusion!

Class One have been enjoying their new 'space station' role-play area!

Class One enjoyed a frosty morning walk today. They used all their senses to explore the school field using lots of super winter vocabulary!

Class One really enjoyed practising their 'tricky words' outside this morning!

We have been exploring ways of making the numbers 1-5 using Numicon.

What fun we had yesterday making autumnal leaf crowns! We began our session by exploring the different colours and shapes of the fallen leaves.

The children then hunted for their favourite leaves to create their own crowns.

As part of our learning about changes in Autumn, new vocabulary such as 'deciduous', 'evergreen' and 'daylight' were introduced.

We linked this art skill with their PSED learning, with the children picking an emotion to represent.

There were some fabulous creations (and lots of colourful fingers!) Can you work out which emotions are being represented?

Exploring Measures: Class One have had lots of fun this week in their Mathematics learning.

As you can see, they have been busy exploring length, weight and capacity through hands-on learning activities.

As it was our first session, today the children were introduced to some special rules that keep us safe when outside.

Helpfully these rules are little rhymes that the children were quick to remember, such as "stay in the safe zone – never wander off alone!"

Whole school Collective Worship was held in St. Matthew's Church this morning and as a school we reflected on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

This was Class One's first time going to the church and I was really proud of how sensibly everybody sat and listened.

Mr Tanner was impressed by Class One’s superb behaviour and enthusiasm during our first PE session this week.

The children enjoyed running, jumping, hopping, moving like animals, and throwing and catching.

Our new Reception children are settling in to school life beautifully and snack time is proving a very popular part of the day!
