Class 2 Information 2025-2026

Welcome to Class 2!

Class 2 is made up of Year 1 and Year 2 children and is situated in a bright, well-equipped classroom. The class is taught by Mrs Searle, and is supported by Mrs Drew, Mrs Gibbs and Miss Raymont. Mrs Ryder covers Mrs Searle's out of class time on a Friday morning, and Mr Tanner teaches the children for PE once a week on a Monday afternoon.

Our topic webs will tell you all about what we are getting up to throughout the year, and this page will be updated with all of our fabulous learning. We like to make as much of our learning as practical as possible in Class 2, using apparatus, visual aids and lots of oral rehearsal to ensure we feel secure and confident. We work with a ‘have a go’ attitude and treat making mistakes as a positive way of learning.

I hope you look forward to seeing our learning adventures this year!

Please see our Class Meeting document below for information on PE days and other important information.

Phonics and Early Reading

In Class 2, reading continues to be a top priority, building on their confident letter/sound correspondence and tricky word reading from Class 1. Across the year, children in year 1 will consolidate their previous learning and cover Phase 5 phonics. Please see the useful documents and links below that can be used to support your child with their phonics learning.

Wednesday 29th April

Class 2 have been busy young scientists this afternoon. We’ve been learning all about microhabitats and minibeasts, exploring where these tiny creatures live and why. The children went on an exciting minibeast hunt around the school grounds, carefully thinking about the best places to search—under logs, in the soil, and among the leaves.

Back in the classroom, we created our very own wormery! We discussed how worms like cool, dark environments and chose the perfect spot to keep it. We’re looking forward to observing the worms over time and learning more about how they move through the soil and help our environment.

Wednesday 25th March

Well done Class Two on your assembly today on the Christian Creation Story, Amazing Animals and our Super Self-Portraits!

Wednesday 28th January

In art this morning Class 2 drew their own self-portraits using mirrors. We students experimented with different mediums and even tried one in the style of Picasso. We chose our favourite piece and discussed what made it special.

Friday 22nd January

Class 2 had an amazing Forest School session today! We toasted marshmallows over the fire, made bug hotels and bird feeders, and practised some careful whittling skills. Despite a wet and (extremely) muddy day, the children had great fun making mud slides, building dens, and jumping in muddy puddles. Lots of teamwork, creativity, and big smiles all round.

Even with all the fun and games, we managed to take the time to pause and wonder at the nature around us, listening to birdsong and rescuing ladybirds along the way.

Thursday 8th January

Year 1 have been deepening their understanding of the number 10 today, breaking it down into different parts and writing number sentences to match! Year 2 have also been busy exploring money, counting out pounds and pence.

Wednesday 19th November

Class 2 investigated materials and their properties in Science, exploring why different objects are made from certain materials. We compared the properties of each material, thinking carefully about how that property makes it more useful for certain objects. We finished by designing our own feely toy using a mix of materials and labelling each one’s properties.

Monday 03rd November

Class 2 worked incredibly hard this week as we started our Health and Fitness unit. They showed amazing determination and enthusiasm while taking part in a range of circuit activities — from burpees and planks to star jumps, jump squats, and more!
Everyone pushed themselves to do their best, cheering each other on and learning about the importance of keeping our bodies active and healthy. It’s been wonderful to see so much teamwork, energy, and smiles along the way. Well done, Class 2 — you’re all fitness superstars!

Wednesday 22nd October

In maths this week Class 2 have been loving some practical maths! Year 1 have been discovering their number bonds to 10, helping them build strong foundations in number sense. Meanwhile, Year 2 have been working on addition across 10s, using practical resources to deepen their understanding and develop confident strategies for addition.
It’s wonderful to see such enthusiasm and teamwork as the children bring maths to life!

Monday 20th October

Today Class 2 had a fantastic time hot seating in English! We really got into character, thinking up thoughtful questions and giving careful, imaginative answers as they stepped into Sylvia’s shoes. It was wonderful to see everyone showing such curiosity and understanding — truly bringing our school value of empathy to life.

Tuesday 07th October

Class 2 were delighted to welcome a special visitor this afternoon who shared fascinating stories about her childhood. We were amazed to learn that there was once no electricity or running water — homework was done by candlelight, and water had to be carried by hand for baths! She also brought along some of her old toys, lanterns and even an iron which the children loved exploring.

Class 2 were full of questions and couldn’t believe how much everyday life has changed. It was a lovely way to compare childhoods and appreciate all the things we sometimes take for granted today.

A huge thank you to Helen for sharing her stories and helping us imagine what life was like in the past!

Wednesday 01st October

Class 2 have been super scientists this half term as we've explored our senses!
Last week we tasted lots of different things and explored how our sense of touch changes when we wear gloves.
This week we tested our noses! We did a sniff test and worked to try and identify the mystery scents. Outside we tried an obstacle course with blindfolds on - our partners had to be our eyes!
Great job Class 2

Monday 22nd September

What a fantastic start to the week Class Two have had! Today our class went apple picking at Sparkwell Orchard and took part in the process of harvesting ripe apples and making some delicious, fresh juice.

We were amazed by one of our “Wows of the world” - the beauty and abundance of nature around us (and the amount of tasty apples there were). We were reminded of what a special and beautiful time Harvest is - a chance to say thank you for good food, the people who grow it, the world we share and the reminder that we each have a responsibility to look after creation and one another.
Thank you so much for having us - the shaking of the apple tree was a highlight we will always remember!

Wednesday 13th May

This week, Class 2 became young scientists as we investigated an important question: Do woodlice prefer damp or dry conditions?
The children showed fantastic observation skills, carefully watching the woodlice and thinking about their behaviour. They also practised collecting data using tally charts, helping them record their findings like real researchers.
A big thank you to all the parent volunteers who supported us during the activity — your help made a real difference.
After completing our investigation, we made sure to take care of our tiny subjects by safely releasing the woodlice back into the bug hotel.

Thursday 23rd April

The sun was shining yesterday while Class 2 enjoyed the day in the woods. We whittled wands, went on a minibeast hunt, made damper bread on the fire and had plenty of time for exploring.

Monday 23rd March

Class 2 have been learning about mass in maths. They used balancing scales to weigh different classroom objects and compared which were heavier or lighter. We also used cubes to measure mass, counting how many were needed to balance the scales.

Monday 12th January

Class 2 have been learning how to use dictionaries today. We chose words from our class book and worked in pairs to look up their meanings. After finding the definitions, we drew pictures to represent the words and then challenged ourselves to use each one correctly in a sentence. It was lovely to see such great teamwork and thoughtful discussions about new vocabulary!

Wednesday 26th November

Today Class 2 have been busy developing their understanding of 2D and 3D shapes and working on recognising and naming them.
Year 1 worked together to create 2D shapes using lollypop sticks, build 3D shapes with playdough, match and colour 2D shapes and construct models using a variety of 3D shapes.
It was wonderful to see the children so enthusiastic, curious, and proud of their creations. Well done, Class 2 —fantastic shape work!

Wednesday 12th November

This week, Year 1 have been learning all about fact families! The children worked practically in pairs, using hands-on activities to explore how numbers are related. They enjoyed writing out all eight facts in each family and spotting the patterns between addition and subtraction.
Meanwhile, Year 2 have been tackling some tricky column subtraction, learning how to exchange tens with great focus and determination. We’re so proud of how both years are developing their mathematical confidence and team work skills!

Friday 24th October - ARTS WEEK

This week in Class 2, we’ve been celebrating Arts Week- a special time to slow down, notice the beauty around us, and express our creativity in different ways. Linked with World Food Day and the season of Harvest, we have explored themes of thankfulness, growth, and the gifts of nature and community.
We have created beautiful clay apples and leaves, imaginative leaf animals, observational drawings and sketches, and autumnal paper plate wreaths.
Throughout it all, the children have shown great care, focus, and imagination. Most importantly, we’ve taken time to be thankful — for the food we eat, the people who grow and prepare it, and the creativity we all carry inside us.
We are all so proud of the children's thoughtful work and joyful spirit during Arts Week, and we hope you enjoy seeing their creations on display.

Thursday 10th October

Yesterday Class 2 enjoyed a wonderful Forest School session in the woods — a day full of creativity, exploration, and teamwork!

The children began with woodworking, learning how to safely use a saw to cut small pieces of wood before decorating their creatings. They showed fantastic concentration and care while working with real tools! Next, we gathered around the campfire to make delicious smores, carefully toasting marshmallows and enjoying a well-earned treat in the crisp autumn air. During our nature walk, the children looked closely for signs of autumn — spotting colourful leaves and lots of mushrooms. We created timelines of their walk to show the journey they’d taken through the woods. The session ended with some free exploration time, where the woods became a world of imagination and discovery. There was plenty of time for den building and tree climbing, too!

We’re so proud of how confident, curious, and creative our young explorers were — and we can’t wait for our next Forest School adventure!

Friday 2nd October

It was a blustery afternoon for our Wild Woodland Learning session, but the wind didn’t stop Class 2 children from embracing the outdoors!

Together they explored the woodland, observing changes in nature and working as a team to build some fantastic dens.
Even in the wild weather, there was a wonderful sense of calm and connection — with nature, with one another, and with the moment itself.

Thursday 18th September

Class 2 have been busy mathematicians this week! Year 2 have been discovering flexible partitioning while Y1 have been doing lots of practical maths, exploring place value within 10.

Thursday 11th September

What a great first week we have had in Class 2! In English we've been busy making our tiny friends ready to write all about their new adventures next week.
