Spirituality

At Landscove CofE Primary School, we define spirituality as:

‘An awareness of our relationship and connection with ourselves, with others, with the world and the beyond’

These four elements: self; others; world and beyond form the basis of our work with children in developing a strong sense of spirituality

“Spiritual development is the development of an awareness that there is “something more to life than meets the eye, something more than the material, something more than the obvious, something to wonder at, something to respond to.” (Terence Copley)

Spirituality is a personal and evolving journey. It's important to respect our children's autonomy and allow them to develop their own beliefs and values as they grow. Creating a supportive and open environment for their spiritual exploration is key to their development in this area.

Through our approach to spiritual development, we support our pupils to be reflective about their own and others’ religious or nonreligious beliefs, having an interest in and respect for different people’s feelings, values and faiths.  We aim to encourage a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them, including the intangible.

Spirituality is all around us, you cannot see it, but you can feel it. It’s about taking the time to appreciate the little things, the awe and wonder in the surroundings around us, being curious and asking questions. It is unique to everyone and can be encouraged through our relationship with ourselves, others, the world and beyond

At Landscove we strive to recognise, share, and celebrate spirituality, giving children the time, space and encouragement needed to enable their spirituality to flourish.

Spiritually developed children love and accept themselves and enjoy good relationships with each other. They take an interest and delight in the world around them; they are open to what lies beyond the material (this may manifest itself in faith/belief in God). They are able to express and understand feelings, they have a strong moral sense and a love of what is good. They are able to enjoy quiet and stillness, they possess an active imagination, and show joy in creativity and discovering new skills.

Awe and Wonder

Do you remember that feeling as a child of seeing something so amazing that you said “Wow, that’s awesome!”? That is awe and wonder. At Landscove we feel that this magical feeling should be fostered and actively promoted throughout the curriculum for all children and adults.

The world around us is a very special place and as a Church of England school we ensure that we provide the children with the skills, tools and language to understand life and their experience of what it means to be human in an inclusive environment, so that they may flourish and grow as respectful, self-aware, caring members of society.

We are privileged to be able to play an active role in the spiritual development of our pupils and encourage reflection, enquiry and a sense of ‘something other’.

We use a ‘Windows, Mirrors and Doors’ approach to offer children opportunities to reflect and consider their own - and others’ - thoughts, feelings and opinions. It provides a framework through which children can talk about their personal and spiritual development using the imagery of windows to look out on the world, mirrors to look in and reflect on questions like 'what does this mean for me', and doors to look ahead or out to the wider world.

Our vision and values underpin the way in which we provide children with the skills, tools and language to understand life and their experience of what it means to be human in an inclusive environment, so that they may live well, learn and flourish as compassionate, self-aware, responsible members of society.

We also love to share our WOW moments! Here are some for you to enjoy.
